The Region

The southern Touraine, one of the most attractive regions of the Loire Valley, enjoys an exceptionally mild climate. For centuries French kings held court on the banks of the Loire and the many chateaux are unique examples of fine Renaissance architecture, The Châteaux of Amboise, Chambord, Chenonceaux, Chinon, Valençay and Villandry are within easy travelling distance. Tours with its many historic buildings, fountains and cobbled streets with pavement cafés is less than an hour from Preuilly sur Claise.

The Brenne Regional Nature Park with its many lakes, abundance of birds, butterflies, dragonflies and rare orchids is only twenty minutes away. Guided tours of the Brenne and residential short courses in digital nature photography can be arranged. Details on request.

Preuilly sur Claise is a very pretty riverside village with a Benedictine Abbey, Romanesque church and museum. It is surrounded by wonderful countryside suitable for walking and cycling and has an open-air swimming pool in July and August.

Picturesque towns nearby include mediaeval Loches and charming Angles; the former, with its wealth of history, holds markets each Wednesday and Friday. Canoeing trips, too, are possible at Veigné and on the River Creuse, one of several beautiful rivers nearby. Family attractions include a nearby safari park and the Futuroscope theme park. The attractive coastal resorts of La Rochelle and Ile d’Oléron are two hours away.
